Translators can boldly be called “fighters of the invisible front”. After all, the work of translators is unnoticed but very important. There are not so many movies about people in this profession, but among them there are interesting ones, because it is always interesting to learn about the life and work of translators.

We would like to offer you 5 movies about translators.

“Arrival”

An American film from 2016, set in the future when translators will be able to understand not only human language but even the language of aliens. The plot tells the story of how the world authorities turn to linguist-translator Louise Banks for help in establishing contact with an alien race that unexpectedly appeared in different parts of the planet. The fate of humanity depends on her ability to communicate with the aliens.

“The Translators”

A thriller co-produced by Belgium and France in 2019. Nine professional translators from different countries agree to a highly paid job offered by a publisher who is preparing for the release of the final part of a global bestseller. The invited translators are housed in an underground bunker beneath a luxurious mansion, cut off from any communication with the outside world to prevent any leakage of information. However, the publisher soon receives a strange message from an anonymous person claiming that the first ten pages are already on the internet and demands a large sum of money. How could this happen?

“The Interpreter”

A detective thriller from 2005 about a talented simultaneous interpreter who works at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. The seemingly delicate girl turns out to be a real fighter for justice. The lead role in the film is played by Nicole Kidman.

“The Translator”

A historical Russian TV series that shows how a simple chemistry teacher during the Great Patriotic War is forced to work as a translator in a German headquarters, risking his life to save his family and students. No one suspects that this modest and indecisive person is actually waging a secret war against the doctors.

“The Woman with the Five Elephants” (Die Frau mit den 5 Elefanten)

A documentary film from 2009 about the renowned translator Svetlana Geier in Germany. The protagonist refers to the five elephants as the five novels by Dostoevsky that she translated into German. Svetlana Geier, a unique woman, continues to work even at the age of 85, joking that she is simply too old to change the order of her life. Accompanied by a film crew, she embarks on a journey to her childhood city, Kyiv, for the first time in over half a century.

Movies about translators allow us to get to know the people in this profession and understand how multifaceted the profession of a translator is. All translators have one common purpose – they erase borders and serve as a link between people who speak different languages.

Although our translators have not yet appeared in movies, their work is no less interesting than the plots of these films. Contact the Regional Translation Center.
