Is it worth starting to learn the French language?

A little bit about history….

For many centuries, the most influential language was French. From the late 16th to the 19th century, French was the language of philosophy, science, diplomacy, and jurisprudence. French literature, which was read by the entire European educated elite, influenced younger literary languages. Until the mid-20th century, all international agreements were translated into French, and this text was considered the main one. The nobility of many countries in Europe, including the Russian Empire, often used French as their everyday language. For example, they insulted each other in French, showed their “mauvais ton,” or expressed their “charmant.”

Geographical boundaries

The geographical boundaries of French have always extended beyond the borders of France itself. The international role of French is much higher because for many nations it has long been the most important means of communication and understanding of world culture. In Europe, French is the official language in France, but it is also spoken in the southern regions of Belgium, Luxembourg, western Switzerland, and Italy. French is recognized as an official language in 29 countries worldwide.

Popularity and prestige

Today, French is the second most widely spoken language, after English, as it is spoken by over 150 million people worldwide. French is a widely accepted language of international communication, the official language of the United Nations and the European Union. In addition to France, French is spoken in major countries such as Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, parts of Italy, and others. Therefore, knowledge of French can help you find prestigious work in an international company and make your travels comfortable and interesting.

Education

Proficiency in French gives you the chance to receive higher education in France, which is free even for foreign students who know French.

To enroll, you need to confirm your level of French proficiency, which will be the language of instruction. Therefore, studying in France is not just a dream, but a completely real opportunity that gives everyone a chance to obtain a recognized European diploma, which opens the door to the largest companies.

A few peculiarities

Of course, the French language is characterized by an unusual pace of speech for us. For native French speakers, mainly natives of the southern region, a fast and emotional manner of speaking is characteristic, which leads to the “swallowing” of most vowels.

French stress is fixed, it always falls on the last syllable of a separate word, phrase, or entire sentence. In Russian, stress is variable and can be placed on any syllable in a word or sentence. Although French is considered the universally recognized language of love and romance, it is also an analytical language. Therefore, learning it helps structure thoughts and develop critical thinking. French can, without exaggeration, be called the most beautiful language in the world, the study of which brings a lot of pleasant emotions.
