Written translation

Working in a translation agency, you begin to understand the meaning of the proverb “What is written with a pen, you cannot cut with an axe.” Indeed, when a translator is busy translating (especially important documents, such as a passport, permission to leave the child’s country, etc.), it is necessary to be extremely scrupulous, take into account every comma and space. After all, a mistake of one sign threatens the client with a refusal to accept the document in any instance, which is especially critical if he or she managed to go abroad with a transfer, and it is no longer possible to redo the document.

Also, it is important to note right away that despite the persistent association among people that ‘written translation’ is exactly the translation of an article or book, in fact, the vast majority of requests for written translations are related to various kinds of documents. Such a translation, together with notarization, is most often required for passports, birth certificates, police clearance certificates, official instructions, scientific texts. That is why a translator who undertakes to do a quality job must not only have a good knowledge of the required language in general, but also be proficient in specific vocabulary.

Types of written translation:

LEGAL TRANSLATION

Translation of legal texts is justifiably considered one of the most difficult forms of translation. A huge number of specialized terms, dates and figures, each of which, if put in the wrong place, can lead to financial and reputational losses for the customer. From a translator who undertakes this type of written translation, knowledge of legal terminology will be required not only in his native language, but also in the language into which (from which) the translation is being performed.

MEDICAL TRANSLATION

If the price of a mistake in a legal translation can be a damaged reputation and lost money, then the price of a mistake in the translation of medical documents can be health and even life. The amount of technical terminology in medical texts is higher than in any other, even among scientific ones. And this means that the translator must not only be a pedant, but also have at least a basic medical education, and even better – have a complete higher medical education.

TECHNICAL TRANSLATION

When translating technical texts, it is imperative to follow a clear, logical and precise style set by the person who compiled this technical text. Usually, many specific set phrases and grammatical phrases are also used in technical translation. A translator who performs technical translation will need a detailed knowledge of the native and foreign languages, as well as technical savvy.

LITERARY TRANSLATION

Artistic (literary) translation is distinguished by the fact that, unlike other types of translation, it does not need to strictly follow the “letter” of the translated text, but it is much more important to preserve the (spirit) thought that the author laid down and the style set by him (her). Literary translation should be entrusted to people with imaginative thinking, well-read, well-versed in the grammar and vocabulary of their native and foreign languages.
