A high-quality scientific translation must accurately convey the meaning of the original, use terminology consistently, follow the conventions of academic writing in the target language, and preserve the author’s facts, findings, and conclusions without distortion. At the same time, the translation should read naturally rather than sound like a word-for-word rendering of a foreign-language text.

Scientific translation involves working not only with language but also with meaning. The translator needs to understand how concepts relate to one another, what a particular term means within a specific field, and how strongly or cautiously the author formulates a statement. For example, a hypothesis must not be turned into an established fact, and a probable outcome must not be presented as a definitive conclusion.

These criteria are closely interconnected: a text may be grammatically correct yet still be poor in quality because of incorrect terminology or distorted logic.

How Should Quotations, Citations, and References Be Translated?

For this reason, a bibliographic entry should not automatically be translated in the same way as an ordinary sentence. Another risk is stylistic plausibility. A sentence may sound highly natural even though its meaning has already shifted away from the original. Fluency alone is therefore not proof of accuracy.
